Robot games are, well, video, PC and mobile games featuring robots. These action games vary greatly in theme, and a common one is that these games transport and challenge you in futuristic environments, quite often dystopian and post-apocalyptic.

What Makes a Robot Game?

A video game doesn’t have to be solely about robots to be a leading robot game. In fact, robot games come in various guises, including fantasy-themed games, survival games, battle arena games, as well as turn-based strategy games. Although robot games haven’t yet stretched to many online puzzles and other casual genres, this subgenre has become so popular it usually has something for everyone already.

These games may feature elements of robots throughout the plotline, without them being the sole one. For instance, you may encounter robot “bosses” or even robot AI-controlled characters that can help you in combat. Alternatively, you might have to control some robot giants and use their weaponry to annihilate and crush opponents. One thing that is almost always guaranteed with robot games, is slick and contemporary graphics, even on Android and iOS.

Are Robots Games and Mech Games the Same?

Robot games require you to battle or fight against autonomous, robotic opponents or enemies. Mech games are similar in that you will often encounter vast humanoid robots, but usually a mech game will feature super-sized versions of those found in conventional robot games.

Think robot games on futuristic steroids!

Simulation mech games will usually require you to control a mech yourself and immerse yourself in combat. An obvious example that comes to mind is our very own Mech Arena, which allows you to choose from over a dozen mechs and customize their weapons and battle styles.

Put simply, mech games are often more hands-on, while robot games will usually provide a stiffer test of your stealth and strategic capabilities.

The 5 Best Robot Games You Should Know in 2023

Looking for some robot games to get your teeth stuck into on console, PC or mobile? Check out five of the most popular robot games in 2023, including some enduring releases that have been in the public domain for years!

1. WAR ROBOTS

War Robots was released in April 2014 and is one of the most successful action-packed robot games of all time on Android, iOS and desktop. Developed as a third-person shooter, you’ll engage in real-time multiplayer battles with BattleTech-esque robots within a treacherous battlefield. Your mission is simple: to emerge victorious as the last robot standing.

It’s high-octane 6-versus-6 shooter action. You’ll be tasked with controlling and taming one of these robotic beasts to cement your place as the number-one mech commander in the universe of War Robots. Your piloting skills will be put firmly to the test, as you launch counter-attacks and field off surprise maneuvers.

One of the main reasons why gamers enjoy War Robots is the authenticity and realism of its game mechanics. It’s very adept at creating that “us vs them” mentality, as you lead your squad into the heat of battle.

2. Tower of Fantasy

This is one of the newer releases that’s rapidly made an impression as one of the leading robot games in 2023. It’s not an in-your-face robot game by any stretch of the imagination, but there are subtle robotic elements that offer that futuristic feel. Take your robotic sidekick, Mia, as a prime example, who joins you on your adventure across the planet of Aida.

You will also come across different robots on your adventures, including a pretty-looking robotic unicorn named Monocross. As a free-to-play open-world RPG, Tower of Fantasy is almost a fusion of Genshin Impact with the elements of authentic robot games.

It’s been downloaded over five million times on Android alone, cementing Tower of Fantasy as one of the fastest-growing open-world MMORPGs in the last 12 months. Although the game’s title would make you think it belongs in the TD games library, it’s much more of a sci-fi adventure even if there are plenty of battles lurking around every open-world corner.

3. Mayan Death Robots

Mayan Death Robots is one of the most popular indie robot games in recent years. The brainchild of Sileni Studios, Mayan Death Robots transports you to the Mayan civilization, at a time when the region is being attacked and invaded by alien life forms.

Enter the battlefield in single-player and local multiplayer mode and attempt to destroy the advances of these alien robots in explosive fashion. There is more than a hint of strategy involved in winning this game. As soon as the rockets begin to fly, you already need to be thinking of your next move, both from a defensive and attacking standpoint.

Some reviews online liken Mayan Death Robots to a Worms-esque artillery game, but it’s clear there is much more depth to this title than Worms. The “boss battles” are one of the most enjoyable additional game mechanics to this release. For a split second, you’ll stop demolishing your opponent and work collaboratively to overcome the boss, before returning to your customary head-to-head duels.

4. Fallout 4

Bethesda Game Studios’ Fallout 4 is set in the year 2287, a decade on from the events of Fallout 3 and the nuclear catastrophe suffered across the United States. You’ll assume control of the “Sole Survivor”, the only human to emerge from a cryogenic stasis from inside an underground nuclear fallout shelter.

Although it’s not the most obvious of robot games, as the in-game story advances, you will encounter a string of robots throughout the Appalachian Wasteland. Some of you may even come in handy when protecting your home base from invasion. Some Fallout 4 players have also taken advantage of robot-filled mods to take their gameplay to the next level.

The “Automatron” in Fallout 4 makes it possible to craft and build your own robots. You can mix and match elements of failed mech enemies from across the Wasteland to create your own imposing figure that augments your own play style. From flamer guns to laser snipers, your robot sidekicks can become quite the valuable companions.

5. Titanfall 2

It’s fair to say that Titanfall 2 could fall into both the robot games and mech games categories, but we feel it’s best suited to the robot games genre. Respawn Entertainment’s 2016 sequel to the award-winning Titanfall was released without much fanfare, but it is a hugely immersive game that’s still popular to this day.

The single-player mission sees you take charge of protagonist Jake Cooper, rifleman of the Frontier Militia. Combined with Titan BT-7274, the robot of his mentor who was killed in action, you’ll join forces to try and thwart the advances of the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation (IMC) which plans to unleash a superweapon capable of wiping out the militia’s planet.

Stalkers were one of the newest additions to Titanfall 2. Stalkers are robots that act as minions and appear within Bounty Hunt waves and Attrition games. Stalkers are more robust than the likes of Spectres and Grunts and therefore pose a risk to Frontier Militia pilots that take their eyes off the ball for a split second.

Immerse yourself in any of these robot games and you’ll soon feel the power of the machine. Don't be surprise if after one game you'll find yourself saying, "I'll be back"...
