However, almost anything in the game can be obtained without additional investments over a longer time span. Thus, buying packages and resources just helps you progress faster, saving the most precious resource - time. 

To speed up the upgrading process you can use boosts which can be obtained in various tourneys as a reward. It's always possible to find a way in this game on how to get a needed item :)
