I am getting a message that my Hero has maxed out at level 60. Is there any way to advance him past this level? I’ve worked hard building this guy up and I’d hate to have him stuck here permanently. However, if this is the case what would I do next?
That's it at the moment but Plarium has upped the max level for heros before.
So all you can do is up your hero's knowledge and gear - should cost a lot in time/gold/gear, especially the Stronghold gear. Your Clan shoud be able to advise you on what gear, depending on your main troop type and the sort of game you want to play.
Still plenty to spend on. lol

In some way, YES ... it depend of your city level, specialy the hero abode... when you reach some lvl , you will receive skill point who can improve your hero...
hero abode lvl 21 : 20 hero skill point
hero abode lvl 26 : 20 hero skill point
hero abode lvl 31 : 20 hero skill point
hero abode lvl 32 : 5 hero skill point
hero abode lvl 33 : 5 hero skill point
hero abode lvl 34 : 5 hero skill point
hero abode lvl 35 : 10 hero skill point
so, at skill level, a hero 60 is not always the same that a other hero 60... there can be 85 skill point who come from the hero abode at max... these skill point can make a huge difference
