I have just had the exact same expeirence. When I log in, the game wants to start me from day one. How do I get back to the old server? Thank god I never spent any money on this buggy game!

You most likely changed servers by accident, you can change back by clicking on either "The Dark Plains / Untamed Lands" next to your experience bar on the top of your screen
