to step out of my moderator shoes for a moment I can categorically say this 

I dont spend huge amounts of money on the game in fact I only buy the really cheap deals occasionally however due to the fact I am in a great coalition, whose Hegemon is a real strategist I have seen massive growth since joining them, he works out exactly how much each member has to score in each and every tournament to gain the most cost efficient benefits, our coalition is extremely active, we all work together as a tight knit unit and it works 

I recently had a player baiting me that I know even I would struggle to beat so a couple of us worked as a team and he lost EVERYTHING, all his off, all his def and has spent the last 10 days under a protection bubble hiding 

you can be extremely successful in this game without spending vast amounts of money and actually, working as above is hugely entertaining as well

1: The rich will always rule the poor. It works like that in Sparta, in the ancient and in the modern world.

2: In the ancient world, the poor get killed for complaining or trying to rise up against the rich. At least in Sparta, the poor can complain AND hide. So the rich might as well complain that the acropolis is unbalanced.

3: Fortunately in Sparta, only the rich can kill the rich, if the poor is smart. 

When you look at the subject of this post ("He who has the most money wins"), you can't really argue that it is a statement that is generally universally, true. So how to approach the game then, well maybe it helps to view it more as a "real life" type of game (in a sense) and make peace with the fact that wealth is power and play your role within that type of world, or, go play a different game.

Sparta used to be an excellent well balanced strategy war game.  Plarium in their greed, have since turned it into nothing more than a money pit.  

Thanks to Plarium, there is a fake COA in the top 10 positions.  Because it exists, Plarium has broken faith with the majority of  its clients. 

 The new business model seems to want us to spend TONS MORE MONEY in an attempt to BEAT PLARIUM AT THEIR OWN GAME.   Well, that will never happen.

They are like the Las Vegas casinos where you will never beat the house.  You will just keep pouring money into them in a futile attempt to accomplish something.

The shift in power in this game has been noticeable for some time now.  Mega players are all converging to one or two coalitions and VIP agents are doing favors and deals outside of in-game package deals.

What do you mean by fake Coa?

You can't be serious.  The fake COA is Plarium's  new income stimulus package.  Players have most certainly upped their monthly spending allowances in Sparta because of the miraculous rise of this "COA" in the top 10.  And it is a sucker's bet to think that they can actually spend enough money to protect themselves from it.   The Winner = Plarium

actually the amount of hours I spend here I probably lose more in the way of Drac missing out on galley tricks, raid ranking, PvP ranking etc than I get given by Plarium, you guys seem to think we get 10's of thousands of dracs, we dont! 

Sun Tzu said: "He will win, who knows when to fight and when not to fight". In any MMO Strategy it is inevitable that you meet players who have been playing for longer, utilized the mechanics that the game provides them with better or have found a cunning strategy to propel themselves to the top. However if you know a particular Archon is overwhelmingly more powerful, you have every opportunity to avoid conflict. Be it through diplomacy or simply utilizing Acropolis to avoid the battle and you will not lose a single soldier. Of course the enemy raid may cost you a certain amount of Resources, but at times that may be preferrable to sustaining losses that would take a lot more than 50,000 Timber, Bronze and Grain to replenish. There are multiple players in Sparta who have not spent a single penny and yet are doing well, the trick is knowing your strengths and utilizing them.

Guys, its a pay-to-win game, get real, thats how they make their money.

Every game, especially web browser game has 2 bad things...

one is that they are all pay to win, and the second is cheats...  

Yeah, it took me this long to finally figure that out.  There are coiners on right now who have destroyed all Sparta strategy in how COAs can win in this game.  There are no strategies.   There is just money.   I am bitterly disappointed.
