If i use heroes who have weapons equipped for rank up will i lose those items ??

Yes you will lose the gear. the unit being ranked up is safe. But the units you use as food to rank up will lose anything equipped.
If they have anything good on them take it off first.

I totally didn't realize I was using my heroes as "food." Lost a couple decent ones. Anyway to get them back?!

It's been suggested (and I believe confirmed, although I do need to check up on it) that there is an information box telling people if champions have items before they are used to feed. Like there is when you try and use a rare champion.

I have max level hardscale(lizardmen) and a max sniper and I’m trying to rank up the hardscale and eat the sniper and it’s not allowing me idk why?? Sorry if this is a bit confusing.

Make sure you have all the silver and champions or chickens you need. Also, go to your Champions page and make sure your Sniper isn't locked. There is a lock symbol next to the selected champion that indicates if it is locked. The lock is an option that keeps you from using up champions that you like and is not something you can change from the Tavern page.
However, if the Sniper is already max level, you might want to rank it up as well because it is harder to get higher ranked champions that you don't mind getting rid of.

The Hardscale is at least 2-star, so you need to use at least two 2-star champions to rank it up to 3-star. So one 2-star Sniper isn't enough--you need to double that.
So to be clear:
To rank a 1-star champion up, they need to be 10th level and you need to sacrifice one 1-star champion (any level).
To rank a 2-star champion up, they need to be 20th level and you need to sacrifice two 2-star champions (any level).
To rank a 3-star champion up, they need to be 30th level and you need to sacrifice three 3-star champions (any level).
To rank a 4-star champion up, they need to be 40th level and you need to sacrifice four 4-star champions (any level).
To rank a 5-star champion up, they need to be 50th level and you need to sacrifice five 5-star champions (any level).
To rank a 6-star champion up ... well, you can't. 60th level is the ceiling.

If you choose to sacrifice a champion that has gear on it, that gear will disappear with the champion that your sacrificing.
