I'm pretty new to the game. What I feel could be a good change : make it so that the energy you receive for playtime rewards, batlling arena etc... goes to your stash instead of directly to your energymeter. That would make it easier for F2P players to stash up on energy for special occasions.
Even paying players would prefer this, i would think.
Considering the near-daily energy refills granted by the daily free offers, it's not exactly hard for F2P players anymore to stash up on energy for special occasions. I think the balance between direct energy gifts and refills that you can save is about right, now.
I want to add some information. I was able to play for some days. I used to logon and collect my daily refills for energy. check my energy level now. check screenshot below:
Of course if you don't play you can collect as much energy as you like... I'm talking about solutions for ACTIVE players.
The free refill is one every 2-3 days, and it would make me happy to see the number i can collect for later times grow.
