If they never played the game before it should work. The game recognizes each device that its downloaded from, so if it was previously downloaded, the link won't work.

Referrals require at least the sign up to be on a different device to work as a referral. You two can play on the same computer with no issue. If you want referral credit, you need to sign up from your own devices, then an log in on whatever you like.
