Beginner question, I don't get it

From the Counselors, the Tinker tells me that some new prizes have been sighted, for example a Sea Fort. I send my defensive forces there, but then I am lost. How many? So far I have been sending all. And yes, I win all, but lose quite a few valuable units (fleet, mercenaries, pirates). If I send not my most valuable units, I also lose a lot. On these prizes you may in some experience points and some gold/timber/rum, but not enough others to compensate for your losses. So as a result, my number of units have started dwindling down.

What am I doing wrong?

Then one time I got presented with two prizes. It was not clear to me if I have to attack or defend them. Unfortunately I chose Attack, the wrong choice..... ALL my attack units have been destroyed, not a single one left. It now seems impossible to recover from this. The game has become impossible to play. Anyone else has had this experience, and how to proceed from here?

Thanks for any help...

It looks like you are unfamiliar with banking thing. The troop you lost in killing prizes you will get them back not the same but maybe better one's and sometimes the one's not good.

Let say your maruder got killed in prizes which costs let say 100 (gold+ lumber+rum) now you have a deposit of 112 with the prizes (12% is interest here) and these amount keep summing up until you get your payout in the form of troop/resources.

for the rest please read here.

Ahh thanks, they are kinda queued and will some day, in some form, be paid out? Anyway I can influence this? I'm stuck with no attack basically. I forgot on what kind of mission it was, and how I even got there (only 2 prizes were presented, not the usual list you can see from the Tinker or Lighthouse). Or is it irrelevant to complete this specific mission, any will sooner or later pay out the bank anyway?
