This screen shot, edited for clarity, shows that the game can't tell when I have too few gears to buy.
The "cash" transactions (gold, lumber & rum) all work and the gears used to be counted correctly.

This is probably the oldest living bug in the game and, sadly, I don't think it will ever be fixed. For details, lookie here.
The math in this game is deceptive in more than just this case, and it really isn't cool. IMO it should be illegal. The +50% Gear Manufacturing Speed upgrade is just one example - and I noticed that whenever it gets mentioned, instead of getting an explanation, the topic gets shut down or the poster gets admonished for bringing it up and told that it's already been answered - but no link to the answer is provided. That's such BS, but get used to it.
