What kind of troops are represented by only a question mark

I lost more than half my troops in a defense of my city and the battle report report shows the other player having some troops as a question mark only.  Any idea what this is?

I think all it means is that you didn't have those troops in your army at that particular attack/defence. Also, when you lose a battle, info regarding the victors army seems to be partially withheld - number of troops and type of troops - are not fully disclosed - instead we see question marks.

In your case, T5 ranged and siege, because there's no other option. ? troops are any troop you didn't even kill 1 of. Since troops always show according to tier, and you have T5 troops visible before the ? ones they must be T5 and only 2 T5 types are missing. you also killed 80% of the T1, T2 and T5 Cav&knights he sent. The rest of the #s you truly don't know.

Also, not visible is the fact that your main, and probably only, T5/T4 type is spearmen.

Right! I think it's quite logical.
