Can someone explain this to me?

I've seen this occur often in play and cannot figure out any kind of benefit from it and neither can anyone else in my league.

A player about 100 to 200 miles away sends either a raid or a siege to your castle.  It takes upwards of an hour or more for it to get there.  When it finally arrives it's one or two low level infantry.  So the raid or siege fails.

What possible benefit could this be to the aggressor?  You don't get a full troop display on failure so they aren't getting any details.  If it's to incite retaliation why send it so far?  I don't see how it could even be setting up a trap as who is going to go that far to retaliate?

It's to the point now that when I see a raid that far out I assume it will be one of these tiny attacks.   I just don't see any logic or strategy behind this method.  Am I missing something?  Trust me when I say this happens with enough frequency that it feels like there must be some kind of reason for it.    I should say I play in untamed lands.

also used to be a common thing to send a wraith or single unit attack as a "warning" to back off

I personally won't hit castles that are low level and used to send them as well but I really don't bother anymore

Hi :)

I think the main reason is to annoy another player as it's rather frustrating when you see this incoming Raid.

But as ROADSTAR PITBULL said, also a good way to "hide" a real Raid.

I think y'all got the annoying part right.   Good to know I'm not overlooking some obvious game play benefit.  Thanks for the responses.

These kind of attacks are called fakes attacks, They have many purposes.

In a war or challenge, they are primary used to diverts the league attention, thus limiting the attacked league them from forming an effective WOD( wall of defense).

On a personal level, I use them to mask my attacks. I will send 1 unit then ten more doubling the number of units each time, calculate the speed vs arrival time effectively, and send a huge attack in between. These kind of attacks make the attacked feel safe, thus he will withdraw his defense out, and BANG it will die. when the real attack comes in.

Some players send fakes, to earn relics and crystals.

To know if an attack is fake look at its speed, (unless  the player is smart and boost the fake)
