How do Shards work?

My infantry shows only +8% defense for Hildr's Power level 6 in the Sentry House when I cursor over a defensive unit like an archer. However, I have Hildr's Power level 6 (+6%) and Mara's Justice level 6 (+10%) active in the Sanctum of Shards. This should give my infantry +16% total by my reckoning. Am I figuring this wrong somehow?

it only shows 6% because you have only one active crystal for the infantry.

Hildr's Power is the one that adds defense stats to infantry troops (different bonuses against different troop type).

Mara's Justice is for bestiary troops so that is going to add the bonuses to your bestiary (griffins , unded dragons etc)
