Urban Planning - Filling empty building slots

It's a bit quiet tonight here at the forum, so let's try some brainstorming :-).

Even after constructing all buildings available and filling all fortification and decor slots on the city map, around a dozen large building sites remain available which cannot be filled. Obviously, one hopes that in time, new buildings will be introduced, such as the Amphitheatre a few months back, which will provide additional game options.

But what if these slots could be used in the meantime, even if whatever is built there might need to be torn down to make room for a new major building sometime in the future?

Any suggestions? Here are a few examples simply to get you started thinking about what could be possible:

  •  Additional decor such as temples, parks, parade grounds, statues, infantry or cavalry units (for large building slots) which would contribute to the city's defensive values.
  • Additional fortifications such as war machines which would also contribute to city defenses
  • Storage areas which would (slightly) raise either total resource storage outside (or even inside?) the Acropolis.
  • Production sites which (slightly) increase timber, bronze and grain production.
  • Training grounds which would be used to speed up unit training of a specific type.
  • Storage buildings which would either augment or speed up trade.
  • Or simply buildings and other constructions without any meaningful value except to jazz up the "skyline".

I'm sure many of the above would have too much of an impact on game mechanics and some might be difficult to implement without having to touch meaningful amounts of core code, but this post isn't really a suggestion (yet :-) but rather a way to get the ball rolling.

Any ideas?

Knock yourselves out :-)

One of your suggestions wouldn't upset game play at all: making available purely decorative buildings (and if not Sparta, at least Athens and the rest of Greece give lots of nice names to use!) would be cool. Perhaps some could be built with resources, others would require drachmae or GPs or whatever. This sort of thing is already offered for the external view of cities, so why not for buildings inside? Excellent idea, IP!

Interesting. The downside of that location is that it's covered by the Walls, so the decor buildings would not be visible. Unless we introduced the 3D City with a possibility to turn it around and see the hidden decor.

Who knows, maybe one day our game will evolve to that point :)
