Defence stats for offensive units

Hello, I am unsure of how the battle calculation works in the game. I am not looking for a formula, just how the mechanics work because I could not find it in the game's help section. I understand casualties are roughly based on the ratio of strength of each force eg a defending and attacking force of equal strength causes rough 50% casualties to each side, but I am missing some of the finer details.

I was looking at the stats for the Myrmidon and the Spartan Hoplite and I noticed that the Myrmidon has a "high" defence verses heavy units and the Spartan Hopllite has a high defence against light units. Are the defence stats for offensive units used in battle calculations when they are attacking? Conversely for defence units, are their offence stats used in the battle calculation when they are defending?

If this is the case, does the defence stats of Myrmidons mean they will take less casualties against defending heavy units than a similar strength force of Spartan Hoplites?
