Champion Spotlight: Barbarians, Update 0.11

Hounded off their ancestral lands by the march of the self-proclaimed civilized nations, many tribes and clans found themselves faced with a choice - accept foreign rule or find a way to survive. Many chose the latter, turning into nomadic raiders, mercenaries, and bandits. They follow no god or creed save for the good of their kinsmen or, in some cases, just their own. And now, as the world descends into chaos, perhaps these barbaric tribes will rise once more and claim a home of their own.

Remember, no king and no god will grant you freedom. It must be won with steel and blood!

Turvold

Turvold’s birth is shrouded in mystery. Some suspect he was born of a union between a hermit witch and a giant, a rumour that gave him the rather appropriate nickname “Giantson”. The rest of his youth is mired in tall tales, most spun by Turvold himself. He is said to have been discovered by a Norr hunting party in the forest depths as a child and adopted by one of them. His unnatural strength and resilience ensured that in due time he became the tribe’s most respected warrior.

He is said to have single-handedly slain a terrible Wyrm that terrorized the area for over a hundred years. It is in the Wyrm’s hoard that he found a mighty greatsword, infused with the chill of Winter by the great smiths of old.

Taken by the desire to prove himself further, Turvold traveled the land as a mercenary for many decades and made a name for himself serving nobles of both Kaerok and Aravia. Though over a century old now, the blood of giants that runs through his veins keeps Turvold as mighty as he was in his youth.

Wisened by his age, he has become as cunning in battle as he is strong, now capable of exploiting the weaknesses of his enemies and delivering terrifying blows that make the ground itself quake in awe.

Born to a tribe long-exiled from their homeland, Valkyrie found herself fighting for survival in the inhospitable Deadlands from a very young age. Predatory beasts, raiders from rival tribes, and dangers far worse have plagued the Barbarians for generations. But hard times create strong people.

Valkyrie has always felt a strong need to defend those close to her. First, her friends in the childish fights and conflicts, then her kin and tribe in numerous battles. Talented and fierce, she earned a well-deserved reputation for standing firm in the face of overwhelming odds.

In battle, Valkyrie is a steadfast bulwark for her allies. But no individual is perfect. The hardships she had to endure shaped Valkyrie into a passionately envious woman. Unfortunately for her enemies, this only spurs her on to strike at those who possess the things she desires.

Aina

It is only natural that some tribes hold long-standing grudges against powers that ousted them from their homelands. But many others are warriors at heart and, while they hold no love or loyalty for these greater kingdoms, they see their fate as a chance to grow stronger. Thus is Aina, who made it her goal to learn as much as she can from foreign warriors.

Though still a young woman, she has traveled across Teleria and served as a mercenary to the High Elves of Aravia, the Knights of the Sacred Order, and the proud Bannerlords of Kaerok. She honours the traditions of her people, yet has crafted a combat style based on the best martial traits she had mastered in her travels.

Aina is an accomplished duelist and strikes with the precision of an asp, whose poison she uses to coat her spear. Ferocious spear thrusts rain down upon her foes with blinding speed, and there are very few warriors who can hope to survive Aina’s deadly attention.

Woad-Painted

Blue colour has always been associated with water and the sky. So it is no surprise that to people struggling to survive the desert it is a colour of good fortune. Many Barbarian cultures that now reside in the sizzling Deadlands have come to use blue dye to signify their status. Often it is reserved for great warriors, priests, ritualists. It is not uncommon to see renowned Barbarian mercenaries take this preference to the extreme, such as only wearing blue clothes or dyeing their hair blue.

The Woad-Painted, as she is known, prefers a more tasteful approach and keeps her obsession with the lucky colour in check - by Barbarian standards! But she has plenty of skill to make up for any eccentricities on her part. Her greatsword does not just look impressive, it delivers shattering blows that the Barbarian warriors puts all her strength into.

But overwhelming strength is not the only trick the Woad-Painted has. During her service as a mercenary, she picked up on the finer aspects of tactics and uses them to great effect. Enemies who expect to face an unrefined and straightforward berserker will soon find themselves outmaneuvered and unable to carry out their most devastating attacks.

Anointed

Although the Barbarian tribes that are settled in the Deadlands now have no common religion, they do share a set of more primal spiritual practices. These sometimes unwittingly draw on the power of Lumaya or Siroth, whom they know under different names and guises.

There are men and women in the tribes whose connection to these powers is particularly profound. These form a special cadre of warriors known to the foreigners as “The Anointed”. They undergo garish and intricate ceremonies before the battle, involving fearsome chanting, ritual dances, bloodletting, and even mind-altering substances.

But the results are worth it. This tribal warrior can call upon the spirits, or Gods unknown to him, and use their powers to chill his enemies to their bones and take their strength. And his primal warcry inspires his allies, gifting them with unnatural focus and spurring them on to enter battle as fast as they can.

Bloodbraid

Barbarian tribes that hail from the southern lands of Teleria have a very distinct preference when it comes to decoration. Easily recognized by intricate tattoo patterns across their bodies and matted hair that is often dyed, these warriors have a well-deserved reputation for ferocity. It is this custom that gave the name “Bloodbraids” to the female warriors of a particular family of southern tribes. Though the rumors that they use the actual blood of the slain as a hair dye are grossly exaggerated.

Nonetheless, Bloodbraid is a dangerous opponent. Though her glaive is somewhat unwieldy compared to more refined weapons, she is capable of delivering bone-shattering swings in quick succession. The true danger, however, lies in her ability to cause wounds that are near-impossible to heal, either through the use of poison or some obscure arcane means.

Elder

Life in the Deadlands is hard, violent, and often rather short. Barbarians, who managed to survive to a truly old age are revered among their tribes both for their wisdom and their martial skill. And although they may not be as strong as they once were, these Elders are still experienced warriors that are not to be underestimated.

Venerable age gives the Elder another unexpected advantage. His contempt for death is unquestionable, and he does his best to protect his younger allies, even if it costs him his life. Because for any true warrior, death in the glorious blaze of battle is preferable to a slow and drawn out sunset!

Dervish

Not all Barbarian tribes were forced into the Deadlands and the Krokhan Desert. Some have lived in these inhospitable sands for as long as anyone can remember. These nomads are well known for their ability to not just survive, but thrive. Though known as dangerous warriors in general, they are particularly famous for their mastery of the bow.

Among these nomads, the Dervish stand out. Willing or unwilling hermits, they must learn how to survive among the searing dunes on their own. And this archer is certainly not to be taken lightly. She has learned just where the arrow must hit to damage heavy armour plates that many of the “civilized” invaders are so fond of, and the arrowheads are often covered in poison that makes healing difficult.

They don’t have aura skills, the whole lot of them. Is this going to change?
