How does matchmaking work ?

There already a section on this? My apologies if there is. How does the system work ? Based off my observations, it seems purely based on exp level. Does Division rank, power level, or win/lose record matter ?

I think basing off power level would be a great way to ease the mind of those that scream "P2W".

It is off of team squad power.  So for example:

  • Team A has a player with 2,000 SP and all other players/bots have 1,000 SP for a team total of 6,000.
  • Team B has 5 players with 1,200 SP for a team total of 6,000 SP.

This is why some players perceive the matches as being unfair because they are looking at individual strength instead of team strength.

There  is  no  way  however  for  a  human  to  verify  the  above  statement  as  you  can  not  see  what  the  overall  squad  power  of  a  team  is.    You  are  only  able  to  see  what  the  other  human  players  are  at.

Having  a  game  where  it  is  dominated  by  AI  mechs  give  one  the  feeling  that  the  deck  is  stacked  against  you...  so  Often  it  does  feel  as  though  your  AI  rushes  out  in  the  open   begging  to  be  taken  out .    Sort  of  like  this  match  where  it  felt  like  I  was  behind  the  8  ball  the  entire  match.

as  the  only  human  in  the  match  I  also  have  to  winder  why  MM  could  not  find  one  single  human  for  the  other  team.

During the BETA of the game Individual Squad Power was shown on the loading screen so you knew what you were up against. It has since been removed but there are still some who wish to see it brough back.

Rescue, does the matchmaking algorithm consider anything, whatsoever, other than squad power (e.g. division, experience, mech ?) If not, doesn't that mean players can manipulate opponent difficulty just by reducing number of mechs they have active in hangar? E.g. if I have 5 mechs loaded, normally 2500 squad power, but remove 4, leaving my best mech at rank 6, I may have 600 squad power which is the same as a new player. Does that mean I take on same opponents as new players even though I would decimate them?

As it was last expalined to me Squad Power plays the largest factor.  However, I don't know what other inputs are used or have been added to establish a match, ie Win-Rate, Division rank, Tournament Placement, Progression path, etc.

There were players who did what you stated above but going in with 3 mechs to artificially lower their SP.  My understanding is this was addressed in the BETA but again not sure how they addressed it as it no longer seems to be an issue players bring up.

Rescue, I tested the theory and removed all but 2 mechs, leaving only 1000 squad power [CPC]. However, removing mechs from my squad did not reduce AI rank and difficulty whatsoever. I was matched against all AI and my 2 rank 5 mechs with rank 5 weapons were quickly decimated by equally ranked mechs. On my 1000 SP baby account, AI is usually rank 3 or lower. Accordingly, squad power has apparently little to no effect on matchmaking from what I can tell. Can you please reach out to the developers and provide the actual mechanics used for matchmaking with AI and real players?

Edit: I loaded up another match with my best 5 line up, 2600 SP all rank 5 except one. I was matched against all AI and the AI was a cake walk. Some were rank 3 with rank 3 weapons. Something is seriously flawed!

I'll ask but it is kind of like asking for the launch codes for nuclear weapons.  Will see what I get from it.

Thank you for the support Rescue. I understand the concern and the analogy, but until players actually understand the mechanics, then there will always be complaints and confusion.

I seem to be waiting for over a minute and not getting into an arena in order to pound other mech. Is this a game issue or just matchmaking problems?

Hello, Pilot! It's hard to say until we have a look. Please contact our Support team on this matter. Here is the link for you -> https://plrm.me/arena_support Our agents will be happy to help. Good luck!

Hi Rescue, Alina, have we learned anything new yet from developers regarding the match making algorithm/mechanics?

Sorry Bro...I know it is a highly discussed issue in the moderator section on Discrod and we forward every valid critique and suggestion but no response on how MM exactly works other than what has previously been discussed.

That's a real shame Rescue. It's definitely not team squad power based alone. If it is, it's most certainly broken.

I tested some settings last night and it is absolutely possible to manipulate the level of the opposing team.

There are also different algorithms for each game mode.

What settings did you test? What insights on algorithm did you take away?

I really want to post all the details but I want to see if anything is addressed in the next patch before I go into what I have notice.

I  agree  different  algorithms are  used  for  the  different  modes.    Tournament  gets  the  most  difficult  algorithm  applied  becuase  so  many  players  are  trying  to  get  those  top  prizes...     it  is  in  tournamnet  mode  where  you  will  see  the  most  schewed  matchmaking  with  players  of  1.5k  often  put  up  against  players  of  well  over  3k.

though  this  week  it  has  leveled  out  so  its  possible  they  (  devs  behind  these  algorithms  )  realized  they  needed  to  add  more  balance  because  players  were  noticing  whales  getting  very  preferrential matchmaking.
