Scouting Tips

By Aaron Janusz

Normal scouting is not allowed in the positions, but you can use targeted attacks to learn more about the Persian strength.

Defensive Scouting

The battle report from a Defensive Position will always show the total number of Persian units present and killed. Any defensive unit or combination of units can be utilized to scout, but it can be as simple as sending one javelineer.

Here is what a battle report looks like using one javelineer as a scout on a level 63 Defensive Position.

From this scouting report we can calculate the exact Persian strength at this Position, which looks like this.

Asvaran (Cavalry)

Dailamite (Light Infantry)

Archer (Heavy Infantry)

1419

56760

Immortal (Phalanx)

1134

68040

Total

335600

This Defensive Position is being attacked with 335,500 in Persian offensive strength. The Persians are strong in light infantry and cavalry in this Position so we would want to use units that have strong defense in those categories.

Offensive Scouting

The battle report from an Offensive Position will only show the total number of Persian units killed. The important information we receive from an offensive battle is the mix of Persian troops. The way the Position battle mechanics work each class of Persian units loses the same percentage of troops from an attack so the number of troops killed in each class is proportional to the total number of troop of troops present in each class.

Scouting low level Offensive Positions can be accomplished with 1 – 10 heroes or swordsmen. Above level 20 Positions, you will need around 1,000 in offensive strength to get a decent picture of the Persian army. The more strength you send, the better picture you will get, but be careful of sending too much of one unit. Sending several cavalry units against a cavalry heavy Position will result in losing more troops than necessary. Your troops are an investment of time and resources so use them wisely.

Here is what an Offensive Position battle report looks like using one upgraded Sarissophoros as a scout against a level 57 Offensive Position.

From this battle report we know the strength of the Persian units killed at this Position, which looks like this.

Based on the strength killed per class, we know that the best classes to use at this Position are heavy infantry (640 strength killed) and light infantry (680 strength killed) and phalanx would be the worst class to use (1,160 in strength killed).

Remember on an Offensive Position you want to attack against the Persian weakness and avoid their strength for the best results.
