THE BUYER'S GUIDE TO CREATING YOUR OWN EMERALD CITY IN SPARTA

By Jon J. Stearns

Before I begin, I think it is important to mention that like everything else involving Drachmas, this endeavor requires a financial investment on your part. So if you have the money and the time, here is a guide to making the most of your new City.

The Agora

I have to admit, when I first undertook this huge project of upgrading with Sketches, I thought that it was just icing on the cake and that it did not matter how long each upgrade took. I was wrong on two accounts.  First, it does matter because with the Level 20 Agora, if I remember correctly, it took at least 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 days to complete each new Level of my Resource Building upgrades. It is a long time, especially when you're planning to complete more than one upgrade.

I discovered that upgrading your Agora to the maximum Level, Level 22, accomplishes two major goals. Firstly, it reduces the upgrade time to 5 1/2 days. This is great because whether it is Level 21 or Level 25 you are upgrading to, it only takes 5 1/2 days, which frees you up faster and allows you to start on other projects in your City.

Secondly, there is a major benefit to upgrading the Agora to Level 22: it allows you to get the Temple of Hermes to the maximum Level, Level 6, only three days after your City was raided. I did not know this until after I had to rebuild after a Raid. I noticed that instead of the usual 19 hours for each Level to rebuild, it would take 12 hours to rebuild each Level, which means two Levels a day and six Levels in 3 days.

I cannot count how many times I've seen players complain on the suggestion thread saying that something needs to be done about Hermes because it takes excessively long to rebuild after a Raid. Well, this is something you can do to resolve the problem and you can use it every day in the game after a Raid.

I rate upgrades by how much they improve the convenience in the game and how necessary they really are. These upgrades surpass all others by far. The reason I say so is that they affect the speed of everything you can do in the game.

For example, improving and upgrading your Port and Harbor enables you to transport up to 50,000 Resources when raiding and thus get 100,000 in one trip. So long as you hit someone who has the Resources, of course.

The bottom line is that you will benefit from these upgrades every day and they are very important for your advancement in the game.

Are the New Sketches Worth the Investment?

With all of the new Sketch upgrades introduced to the game, many players are asking themselves whether these new Sketches are worth it, what they need to do to take part, and where to start. I hope the answers I have will be helpful.

Upgrading the Temple Of Hephaestus was my first choice as it gives a 5% boost to all of your Bronze production. Of course, this strategy includes upgrading your Forges as well. Second, if you Raid a lot, the ultimate Raid anyone can achieve is 100k in Resources.

To reach that number without having to have any Dominion activated, upgrade your Harbor and your Port to Level 22. This way, for sure, you will achieve 50k Resource capacity with your Galleys, and you can make the maximum 100k Resource Raid in one trip.  No more double Galley tricks!

Also, this eliminates the calling card that is left when you make your first Galley trip and that warns the target player that you may be back when their Galleys return to collect a 100k Raid. What may happen in this case is that the target player will spend all of their Resources and raise their Defense; that is even worse because when you go to collect your easy 100k Raid, you get nothing. If they have their Defense raised, your raiding army gets wiped out.

One of the best raiding strategies then is to Scout with Equites and Raid with Marauders, if the target City is undefended. That way you can complete 10 Raids of 100k each in less than 30 minutes and gain 1 million Resources in record time!
