If you're like me, you're not willing to back down from a challenge. When I started playing MMO games, I had no idea how complicated they could be. That's why I decided to put the pedal to the metal in search of the Top 10 Tips for MMO gaming success. Strap yourself in, we're about to whizz through the hottest gaming tips you have ever read. Let's rock this interactive gaming party starting in 3, 2, 1…

MMO games are nothing like those arcade games from the 1980s, those hand-held Nintendo games, or board games that our grandparents used to make us play with them. No – MMO games are an entirely new ball game. If you feel somewhat overwhelmed – take a number and stand in line… we all feel overwhelmed when we begin. Tip #10 is to be optimistic. You're in a gaming arena with hundreds, perhaps thousands of other players. You don't get a second chance to make a good first impression. Your attitude will determine your success, even when nothing around you makes any sense. Trust me on this one!

Okay so you've picked out a game that you think you’re going to like, and you're ready to get started. Newsflash! Read the tutorial. You'd only be wandering around aimlessly trying to figure out what you're supposed to be doing. That's no fun at all. Every MMO game is strategy oriented. You must do as much reading as possible to get to wherever it is that you trying to get to. Take some time out before you play, or while you're playing to figure out what you're supposed to be doing. The most basic components of the game include which keys control which actions. You may even wish to try this, or try that and see what results you get. And always remember #10. Make friends and communicate with as many players as you need to – they will help you get through it.

So now you're roaming around in this vast new virtual wilderness of fantasy, adventure and action-packed entertainment. But you're hopelessly lost because you don't know what you're supposed to be doing in this alien landscape. Panic sets in and you start feeling a little bit overwhelmed. Fight or flight – what's it going to be? I recommend dropping anchor and standing your ground. Don't run – that's for sissies. As a new player (a noob or newbie) you're likely to be the target of many experienced players, but don't let that dissuade you. Remember: Everyone started off as a new player at some point. The beauty of MMORPG games is that merit counts. You will prove your worth just like everyone else, acquiring the necessary skills and resources to be the best that you can be. You have already begun!

We are going to backtrack a bit now because this is an important point worth re-emphasising. Reading as much as you can about the MMO game is a sure-fire way to success. We have already established that. But you can go above and beyond: join all sorts of online forums related to the game that you're playing. Believe it or not, there are scores of players – just like you – wanting to ask questions, add their opinions and help other players just like you. This is one of the most beneficial ways for you to gain a foothold in the game. And, it's also terrific way for you meet lots of players. Every serious gaming enthusiast has actively participated in gaming forums. Do yourself a favor and start searching for gaming forums related to your favorite MMORPG game.

Invite your girlfriend, boyfriend, partner, colleague, family member or buddy to come and play with you. MMO games are about socializing, and you’ll certainly meet lots of new potential friends through the game...but if you start isolating yourself away from your loved ones, or your best friends, you’re missing the point. The best advice is to invite them to play with you. That way you get to both enjoy the things that you love with one another. And besides, 2 heads certainly work better than one… or so we're led to believe. You could be the awesome foursome, the gruesome twosome or any other combination thereof!

Here is a tip that you're probably well familiar with – but it's worth repeating. Use voice chat functionality, or at the very least, text chat. Be communicative. Most of the time MMO games come standard with voice chat. That way, you can actually immerse yourself in the world of interactive gaming from the get go. MMORPG games take place at a lightning pace, and ‘life and death’ decisions need to be made at the click of a button. So instead of typing, you can churn out all the commands you need, or get the advice that you need simply by using voice chat functionality. Get a reliable headset, stable Internet connection and the right graphics card, and you're good to go.

You’ve heard the expression: Practice makes perfect. Duh! Who hasn’t right? You'll be surprised how many players simply go through the motions of completing the basic aspects of the game and then move onto the next level. Instead of playing one-dimensionally, consider fine-tuning your skills by practising as much as possible. There are special areas in the game – designated areas – where you can do precisely that. There is no reason why you should do things one way, and not another. Try different techniques, methods and strategies and you may just be pleasantly surprised.

You know that there are easy games to play and there are tough games to play. What's it going to be? I recommend that you choose an easy game to start with. Remember MMOs can be really intimidating for new players for all of the reasons outlined above. Not every game is suited to every player. There are loads of free online games that you can play, and some of them are a lot easier to learn than others. I'm not going to list any games, because we simply don't have enough space and there are so many fantastic games for you to choose from. I recommend starting right here at Plarium though!

Now that you've got this far, it's worth reminding you that the main reason why you’re playing this game is for enjoyment purposes. I know it sounds ridiculous – but that really is why you're here. So, pinch yourself! Yes that's it; do it again. You're here to have fun. And if you're not having fun after several hours’ worth of play, chances are the game is simply not for you. If you’re not having fun, find another game that you want to play. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of fantastic MMO games out there. There is no better spokesman for a game than a happy player. Every gaming developer wants to see their players lost in a world of sheer adrenaline-loaded fun.

Remember #6? I’d like to add another tip which is kind of related to that point. Now that you know you're going to be playing MMORPG games, you will have to set a schedule. There is a time and place for everything. So do yourself a favor and allocate set times during the day/night, or over the weekends to play. This is important for several reasons: You don't neglect your real-world responsibilities, and you get into a rhythm with your in-game friends. Keep on gaming – there is no other way!
