I would suggest that nothing you have to buy is worth it,and mostly the charge to gain 'X' % increase on anything is worth as much as it would seem to be.

I suggest  also that you investigate not just the purchase, but what you get for that,and what it is going to take to improve it.

To the best of my knowledge there is nothing in game that warns you of any implications  of anything that you choose to do.It's not until there is any aquisition that the realisation of the cost of the next stage is known.

What you need to do is look at the requirements for upgrading.  The requirements for Gard of Honour are all spending gold.  To upgrade fully - to level 6 - requires 12 billion gold to be expended.  So if you accumulate and spend gold quite fast this is a good gard to acquire.  But if it take you an age to gather a billion gold and even longer to spend it then maybe look elsewhere.
